How to Start Webcomic

We’ve been reading comic-books since we were little, but what is a webcomic? Simply put, a webcomic is just like a regular comic strip, except it’s published on the world-wide-web accessed by millions of users. It’s intended to reach a much larger audience which is why it is posted on the internet; that is the beauty of a webcomic. Many popular newspaper and magazine comics are also posted on the internet such as Garfield and Archie. Below are tips on starting your own webcomic.

1. The first task in making a webcomic is to start scribbling something on paper that envisions your idea and inspiration for a webcomic platform. This can include humour, drama, horror and similar genres.

2. Use page space wisely. Try to keep your drawing and text clear. Each panel should clearly represent your images and text without creating clutter and congestion.

3. Before you start inking and adding color and depth to your characters and peripheral objects, finalize and fine-tune them. Imagine how the characters in your webcomic will actually look once inked.

4. Now is the time to add color and ink to your images. Try and be as neat as possible since this is the final work that will get scanned and uploaded as your webcomic. Most of all, avoid smudges.

5. Scan the piece using a high-resolution scanner. The higher the resolution, the better for your webcomic’s finales state. Larger scanned images allow you to note and change minute problems.

6. Use a photo editing software to add the final touches in text, graphics, background and body. A photo editing software will give your webcomic the final makeover.

7. Resize your comic to meet the screening requirements of your client or your audience. Make sure that once it’s resized, your webcomic remains legible and vibrant.

8. Share your final work with friends for feedback and begin uploading!

As a side note, be sure you create a buffer in-case you are tied up with other tasks. A buffer allows timely releases of your webcomic without delaying the readers or clients. Also, expect to be criticized for your work; criticism, whether negative or positive will only help improve your webcomic in terms of design, content and theme. Finally, always plan your character and stories ahead so they remain crisp and lively to the reader.
